Are your EDI documents ready for the new EU/UK customs border?
Brexit is rapidly approaching
With negotiations still happening, have you thought about how Brexit could impact your EDI processes?
We have already seen some OEMs making changes to their EDI specifications to support EU legislative changes, for example:
- Updating ASNs (Advanced Shipping Notifications)
- Updating packing lists
- Commercial Invoices
- EORI number (Economic Operators Registration and Identification)
- Harmonized System (HS) commodity code (goods classification code)
- Country of Origin
We are going from a no customs barrier to a customs barrier and therefore we will need new paperwork. There will be an impact on freight logistics and customs operations. UK based businesses bringing goods in and out of the UK to and from the EU will need to make import declarations.
This can be done through the Customs Handling of Import and Export Freight (CHIEF) system, using third party software (although you do need to apply for access). This can be complicated, so some companies may wish to assign a third-party customs agent to handle the customs requirement. Each UK company will require an EORI number, plus an XI number if goods are going between Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
After Brexit, we can expect many changes, as suppliers and OEM’s adjust their systems and processes. We are amid uncertainty, however, having a robust EDI based supply chain can help to smooth those bumps in the road that will come with the new way of doing business post Brexit.
What you can do
If you are a supplier, we advise you to contact your customers to find out if they have made, or plan on making, any changes to their current EDI specifications. It is crucial that you are aware of any changes being made to prevent a disruption to your EDI messages being sent and received. This will result in a disruption to your business and could even lead to penalties and/or fines from your customer.
If you do not have an EDI capability and you are looking to streamline and automate your supply chain through the Brexit change period, we can help you. We can guide you through the complete EDI set-up process and find the right EDI solution for your business.
